A great place to go year round. Great for scenery, snow and location without having to deal with the gambler element at Tahoe. Safe for kids as the resort is in a valley with only 1 road through it so there is no high speed through traffic on the road. Nice pool and spa with beautiful sunset views from the spa. If you're getting up in years and don't have quite the energy to rage on the slopes from sunup to sundown anymore, there is a plaza with lots of seating and views of the ice rink, half pipe, and much of the mountain to sit and watch all the wonderful activity. A cross country groomed trail takes you through the meadow or across the highway to more challenging trails. You'll meet up with friendly locals on the meadow trail.

I have had a season pass to Kirkwood the past two years. It was amazing both years. It is the closest resort to San Jose and had the most snow both winters. If Sierra or Heavenly got 4 inches, Kwood got 8. It was amazing. Kirkwood's main runs are rather short, unfortunately. But someone who frequents Kirkwood will quickly learn that there are amazing tree runs in all directions. It was always pretty easy to find untouched powder 3 days after snow dropped. The thing that angered me most about Kirkwood were the two times we were denied entry because the parking lot was full. Both times were total powder days. I have learned to avoid all resorts on MLK and Pres Day weekend unless it is snowing like crazy and the waits are gauranteed worth it.
My rating makes it not look so great. But the 5 I gave for terrain should be weighted heavily.
