Unbelievably long lines to ride the lifts, then when you got to the top the run was nothing but a thin strip of ice. The more crowded ones looked had so many people wiped out all over the place it looked like the aftermath of some natural disaster. All this for one low price of $57- if you can stand a full day of it.

Here is the good and bad.
Good - It is very convinient right off of I-77, good snow blowing capabilities. Bad - Short runs, Not very challenging, Extremely crowded, could get through the DMV line before getting through the lift line at Winterplace.
But despite all that I come back every other year because it is convinient. If you have the time and money, drive 2.5 hours longer to snowshoe. If you want more challenging terrain go to Wintergreen. It is just as crowded but the run are longer and tougher.

Nice open trails, good climate for "real" snow in the East. Good variety of blues and greens, not much for advanced skiers. Not much to do aside from skiing....out in the W. Virg. boonies. Not many places to stay aside from the top of the mountain. Places to eat can be relatively pricy. Hard to find parking places accessible to where you want to go. Overall value.........Snowshoe is the best ski hill from Alabama to West Virginia.

This place is legendary for the length of its lift lines. Expect to wait for up to one hour in the lift line, ski down in 2 to 3 minutes, and then start over in the lift line. It is very crowded but not to worry, they never run out of lift tickets so you will not be turned away. It is right off of I-77, so it is very convenient for bus groups. The number of buses in the parking lot often out numbers the number of cars at Hawksnest. Do not go on Saturday or Sunday, Martin King weekend or President's Day weekend. I can not emphasize this enough.
