SkiTown Lodging Review

When my granddaughter and I decided to take a two-day skiing trip to Stratton, we began to look for a decent place to stay with an affordable ski and stay package. We chose the Colonial House Inn due to the fact that the pictures on their website showed warm and inviting lodging facilities, as well as an entertaining and comfortable “Great Room.” In addition, they were offering a killer of a ski and stay package. Here are my impressions of the Colonial House Inn:

Service – Rated 5.0:
The service was impeccable! We were scheduled to arrive late in the evening when no one would be available at the “front desk”. The staff was extremely helpful with directions, where to pick up my keys, and the precise location of our room. The first time we came into contact with Colonial House Inn staff was at breakfast the following morning. The staff member who waited on us, I believe her name was Kelly, was very courteous and conversationally engaging. She was a transplanted New Yorker, and guided us to a large table with some other dining patrons. This action stimulated conversation among the group, which made breakfast enjoyable. Both the omelets and pancakes were never “run-of-the-mill” and always had a slightly different but delicious twist. The second day we were served by Byron, who I believe, also does the cooking. Again, he served us graciously and was also very hospitable.

After skiing and a change of clothes, we visited the inn’s “Great Room.” We were welcomed with freshly popped popcorn and home made cookies. The “Great Room” had a host of board games to entertain you, if you desired to stay awhile. We didn’t have the time, but I understand guests have the use of the “Great Room” television and DVD player. While making reservations prior to our arrival, the innkeeper, Kim Seymour, urged us to bring our own DVD’s if we wanted.

Amenities – Rated 3.0:
Most inns and B&B’s do not have a great deal of amenities. Outside of what is offered in the “Great Room,” the Colonial House Inn is most likely on par with other inns and B&B’s. What would really set this inn apart and would be greatly appreciated is a large hot tub.

Location – Rated 5.0:
The location of the Inn is perfect from a skiers standpoint. Okemo, Magic Mountain, Stratton, and Bromley are all within 20 minutes of Colonial House Inn. A very short drive also gives you access to the towns of Manchester, Ludlow, and Weston.

Cleanliness – Rated 4.0:
Our room was very clean and everything worked. We had hot water and controlled our own heat via a thermostat (Don’t laugh! I have been to places where heat and hot water have been problematic).

Value – Rated 5.0:
I appreciated most the value of the Colonial House Inn. The room rates were extremely reasonable without a ski and stay package. With the package we managed to save almost 33% off the lift ticket prices Stratton was asking at their ticket windows. A mid-week ski and stay package puts Stratton in reach of the everyday skier with a family. In addition all this comes with a free and delicious breakfast. You couldn’t beat this value with a stick!

In summary: I am definitely planning to visit the Colonial House Inn next ski season. In addition to Stratton, they offer ski and stay packages for Bromley, and Okemo. You therefore are not stuck with just one mountain. Please keep in mind that if you are looking to impress your significant other with heart shaped beds with purple décor and an ultra romantic or luxurious setting, then the Colonial House Inn is not for you. But if you are looking for an inexpensive, warm, clean, hospitable, comfortable, functional, place to lay your head while enjoying a tasteful country breakfast, then give Jeff and Kim Seymour a call at the Colonial House Inn in Weston, Vermont.
