The first time I went to Massanutten did not expect too much but quite impressed. Here is the good and the bad.
Good - Nice layout, friendly atmosphere, less expensive than other local resorts. No crowds on weekdays Bad - Large crowd on weekends (DC people everywhere)
Overall not a bad place. In comparison to Wintergreen, the terain is slightly better at wintergreen especially the tougher slopes. Crowds are slightly worse at wintergreen. Overall it is a toss up.

We've been traveling to Massanutten Resort since 1999. Yes, the Pocono Mountains are much closer to our home but when you consider EVERYTHING that this resort has to offer -- there's NO comparison! We have 6 kids, boarders & skiers, everyone loves Massanutten! For a Mid-Atlantic resort Massanutten is second to none. When considering some Pennsylvania Mountains, Massanutten is still out in front. What makes this resort so special? A great variety of trails, terrain-park, free-style jumps, high speed quad-lift, an on-site 9 lane snow-tubing park - the list goes on! Oh, did I mention the year-round indoor/outdoor water park? Not a small little indoor park but a HUGE facility! The resort also offers a new go-cart track; again, not a dinky little track but a first class facility - the $2 million dollar mini-golf courses are also something to experience.
So how much do we LOVE Massanutten Resort? So much so that we bought a slope-side house and are willing to make the 5-hour drive for winter weekends! I can say with confidence ... after you visit Massanutten Resort you'll be sold too!

When you review a ski area you have to keep in mind its realtive location. You can't fairly compare Massanutten to any resort in the West or New England becasue there is no comparison, but as far as Mid-Atlantic resorts go, this is the best. Its a great place to learn and its got over 1000 feet of vertical drop which is rare for a Mid-Atlantic resort. The staff are very good and the instructors are excellent. If you go there mid week you will not find any lift lines. Even on weekends the lines are managable. And for a small resort such as this, they really have a great selection of runs for the very beginner to the advanced. They even have night skiing and riding, snow tubing and a superb kids learning program. Given its location and size, you really can't ask for more when it comes to terrain, service and staff. The comparable resorts in the area are the ones in Pennsylvania (Liberty, etc.) and Massanutten is so much better than they are. Finally, people living in the Mid-Atlantic have a decent place they can go skiing and riding to every weekend. Keep up the great work Mass!
