I don't think I could recommend this place to anyone. After taking THREE lifts, you finally get to the top of the mountain. Now, at some places this means being very deep into the mountain, here though it takes you to the first opportunity for a full run. The first lift only takes you from the parking lot to the base of the gondola. The gondola then takes you over some canyons to the base of the ski area. Then you take your first chair up to reach a peak. As others have pointed out, this is a really poorly designed mountain. The newest peaks have mainly been open only to allow for residential development and the ski slopes just conveniently pass through.
If you are staying in the Park City area, don't waste your time. Deer Valley, Park City, Alta and Snowbird all have plenty of world-class skiing. Don't ruin your trip with a stop at The Canyons.

Why anyone would choose to ski the canyons, with snowbird and alta 30 minutes away, is beyond me. Between the crowds, the poor layout, the endless traversing, the wind swept ice, and the lack of true steep and deep terrain, the resort was underwhelming and frustrating - even on a day with 9" of fresh (all tracked out by 11am). Too bad Alta had 15" that day, minimal crowds, and the most badass terrain around.

The Canyons has great potential. The only knock on this resort is its infrastructure. They need better connected lifts and less bottlenecks. That said, the terrain off of the ninety-nine-ninety is totally awesome. Lots of steeps there and lots of great tree skiing, not to mention the chutes all the way on skier's left through the gates. Ride there and you get sustained steeps all the way down to the elevation of Red Pine Lodge. Other runs I like - The Abyss off of Peak-5 lift, the run under Peak-5, runs facing north off of Super Condor and Sun Peak Express and Grande and Paradise off of Tombstone. One of the most awesome areas with nice steeps is off Golden Eagle. I wish they would upgrade Golden Eagle from a slow double chair to a high speed quad or even six pack. That would help eliminate the bottleneck of getting on the mountain and also, I would do laps on that chair if it were higher capacity. Anyway, I love the Canyons!

Overall, this is a great resort. I snowboard, so getting from one lift to the next was a little laborious sometimes. There are plenty of hidden powder stashes all over the resort. It is a nice, open intermediate resort. It has more of a colorado resort feel than the cottonwood resorts.

I wasn't very impressed with the Canyons at all. It seemed to be more about selling real estate than anything else to me. The lifts were poorly placed and didn't go to very interesting terrain. It seemed like we kept skiing from one lift to another on busy cat track roads trying to avoid other people. The resort seems poorly planned for flow and a little too spread out.

I loved the Canyons! It wasn't nearly as crowded as all the other Park City mountain's we visited. No lines and really friendly staff. The resort is growing fast, so some contruction - but overall a great experience. Park at the base camp area and take the lift up to the resort - it is beautiful! If you like the steeps and trees check out the "Ninety-Nine" - could have spent the whole week there!

Strengths: enormous size and variety of terrain, decent village, helpful and friendly staff.
Bads: extremely poor layout of lifts. The Canyons have been rapidly expanded and some sloppiness shows - it's very difficult to get from one peak to the next and there are too many bottlenecking trails because the lifts are few and far between. As a result, even with few people and massive amounts of terrain, this mountain can feel small and crowded. Also, some lifts are built in sub-optimal areas such that one has to hike up upon getting off the lift.
Overall - go to the Canyons for the size of the terrain but if you want a great ski experience I would give this a miss over Alta, Snowbird, Snowbasin or Park City.

Overall, The Canyons is a decent resort. Crowds are very minimal, however, it is quite expensive and the terrain is not that great. There was only 1 run I really enjoyed and that was going through the condor woods. I guess I am just a sucker for open bowls and above tree-line skiing. Also, I found the scenery to be just plain ugly. I would recommend Snowbird, Alta, or Brighton. At those three you get more snow, the terrain is better, and they are cheaper.
