Although I've done most of my skiing over the years in Little Cottonwood Canyon, up until about the 2004-2005 ski season, I had only been in the Sitzmark once or twice. Figuring that it was mostly a local Alta employee and lodge guest hang out, it wasn't one of the places I frequented. It turns out that, to make a long story short, the crowd there - and this place does get a bit of a crowd for it's small size - is more eclectic than I would've guessed, to say the least...

Since rediscovering it one evening when the LCC Road was closed and my car was nearly buried in a typical 3 foot dump a couple of seasons ago, it's grown on me a bit. If you like the rustic atmosphere of Alta that you hear and read so much about, then this is your kind of place, very wooden, stone and cozy. The fireplace alone will take care of of you during serious winter while waiting for the LCC Road traffic to gradually clear late in a storm day, and there are outdoor decks all around the lower backside of the lodge facing various directions for the warmer days.

I like to play backgammon; the Sitzmark has the biggest and best table in the Wasatch. The bar offers good hors d'oeuvres, especially the fantastic home made salsa, and the bartenders, who you might expect to be tired from ripping the mountain most of the day, are remarkably energetic and fast at whipping up just about any drink that you can imagine. The prices are downright ski-bum-cheap, making it easy to afford to properly tip the heavily hustling staff.

I didn't ski in the 1970s, started skiing in the early 80s, but wasn't able to ski as much as I like until the late 90s, so I always felt that I missed out on a nice earlier era in the sport. The "Sitz" as the locals call it, is an easy way to experience some of that.

Smiles,
