Considering its location, Ski Roundtop should get a little more respect. I never would expect a ski resort in the suburbs of Harrisburg, PA. And I have to say, I've had a lot of fun at Roundtop.
Disclaimer: I learned to ski here, so it will always have a special spot for that reason.
HIGHS:
1. About as much fun as you can pack into a campus its size, that exists on a hill (not a mountain). Roundtop is small. Its runs aren't particularly long, except maybe Minuteman, and even that is dwarfted by middling trails on other facilities, but it has all the requisites.
2. Location: Since its not in the Poconos, it doesn't draw much of the Philly crowd.
3. Attitudes of fellow skiers: Since its not in the Poconos, it doesn't draw much of the Philly crowd.
4. Wait times at the lifts: Since its not in the Poconos, it doesn't draw much of the Philly crowd.
5. Ski School: My lesson was so-so well over a decade ago. But three of my four kids have gone to ski school at Roundtop. They loved it and have retained the skills ever since.
6. Childcare is friendly, cheerful. They take good care of your kids while you're on the slopes. And they don't just limit it to the toddlers. My ten-year old got a headache once and hung out with our younger one. I don't think we were charged for him.
LOWS
1. Well...its not a mountain, technically...its a hill.
2. Cost per trail ratio is a bit steep. The price is comparable to other Eastern PA facilities, but the # and length of their runs are less than at many of the other ski areas.
3. Access to and from the lodge requires lots of stairs outside, that tend to bite and hold on to your ski boot. Be careful.
4. Bit of a hike from the parking lot to the lodge (but they have several shuttles...I've never had to wait).
BOTTMLINE: Its easy for those who are used to bigger facilities to scoff at Roundtop. But we have always enjoyed our time there and will continue to go there for one-day jaunts.

Ski Roundtop is a good place to learn skiing. I learned to ski there in December 2004. Even my mom who is scared of heights learned there and now loves to ski!
They have an excellent learn to ski package which includes ski rentals, a begginner lesson, and a lift ticket for all the easy trails. The normal price for the package is $49-73. But in December before Christmas you can get this package for an amazing $19. Then you can buy a mountain passport for $39. This is an amazing deal because the Mountain Passport gives you 40% lift tickets and rentals for the rest of the season, plus FREE lessons!! Also the next time you come is FREE!!! This is definitely the place to learn if you live in central PA or MD.
The biggest problem I have with Roundtop is that the trails are very short. Usually the lift lines are not a problem though, even on a weekend. The begginer area can be crowded during the learn to ski specials.
I am not an expert skiier, but I have heard that Gunbarrel is a challenging steep.
This place is mainly for skiing or snowboarding. There is no bar or hotel. There is a snow tubing hill but it is fairly expensive and not too impressive.
There is a half-pipe, and a super-pipe, but that didn't even open this year. There are a few small terrain parks.
It is pretty expensive for a season pass but you get access to Liberty and Whitetail mountains as well.
