I learned to ski at Whitetail in '95. The staff is usually very courteous. It is what it is. For its location I think conditions are very good. It is pricey but economically it has to be. It is crowded usually, but what do you expect with its very convenient location to Washington, Baltimore, and the crowded areas surrounding. I think Whitetail is a very good resort and I enjoy going here even with its shortcomings.

Whitetail is my usual stomping ground, and while it's nothing special it does the trick. A lift ticket for 4 hours is about $46 bu an extra $2 gets you an 8 hour. The lifts get pretty slammed most weekends by mid day so go early or go late. Don't even bother on a holiday weekend. Food is pricey and not good but I'm not there for the dining experience. Terrain park is usually pretty good but the pipe is always questionable, some years it doesn't even get open. Whitetail does not get a lot of natural snow so it's heavilly dependent on running guns which are pretty effective. 4 Hours is usualy enough there and the best thing to do is hit the main side of the mountain first thing in the morning then hitting the expert side by about 10. Keeps the flow rolling a little better.

For Beginners: Whitetail has a couple of good bunny slopes, but they are quite short and easy to outgrow. The next step is a big one (Snow Park). They really need an intermediate step between the two. Snow park is a good run...it is wide, has some steeper sections before leveling out.
Intermediate: There is a nice selection of Blue runs (and Snow Park is a fun ride for intermediates). The Far side seems more like a high-end blue to me. It is my favority but is not always open due to snow conditions. Sloes are wide and pretty long for the area.
Difficult: There are a few decent runs but are limited. They offer some moguls and some steep sections that are fun to ride. The hills are pretty long for the area and are usually well-groomed, but most advanced skiers may get bored after a while, but it is still worth a trip if you don't have any other options.
Lines: I found the lines to move pretty quick, although congestion increases during the weekends. The high speed quad is great...it moves a lot of people and gets you up the hill fast.
Food: Pack a lunch. A couple of sandwhiches and drinks is going to cost you an arm and a leg while still leaving you hungry.
Service: Unlike LIberty, I found the customer service to be pretty poor. Questions and assistance were met with a bit too much attitude, especially for how much you pay to go. I have trouble paying $200.00 when someone treats you like your presence bother thems. The lift staff are the total opposite. They are helpful and responsive to all levels of skiers.
Price: The sad thing is, you gotta have money to go skiing. This place is very pricey for the size of the hills and various ski conditions. I'd like to see more emphasis on discounting at least one day per week to make this hill more accessible. A student discount would be nice as well.
Wish List: 1. Add an intermediate level green slope; 2. Longer trails (I like longer trail skiing vs. just downhilll if not for a change of pace); 3. Lower season pass (you have to go nearly 20 times to make it worthwhile which is not necessarily possible with the weather being so inconsistent)

Whitetail is not a very big resort, however the slopes are wide and the conditions are usually excellent.

Terrain: As an advanced skier of 10 years, I find myself finding it harder to challenge myself here, unless I do moguls which I'm learning. The blues are about the same with the drop off from the top being the steepest portion on these. Of the blacks, Bold Decision has the steepest section, which can be moguled. Far side (black) is really a blue trail at the bottom and green at top; if not groomed it can be fun. Exhibition if usually half moguled/half groomed...good place to learn. Although not much a challenge for me, the 935 ft of vertical offers ya a longer trip down and on the plus side, if you get to the 'expert lift' early in day, it's usually not crowded. Good snow overall. Service: They are above average here; a shuttle bus will even pick you up/return you to the lot. Friendly people. Crowds: Yep, they got em. Get in early, ski the blacks and then go relax in lodge. Activities: Jee whiz. I just don't notice anything but ski terrain. Value: about a 3.5. to 4, based on vertical.
