Probably should not say this since it will only cause the lift lines to grow but this mountain is the best ski value around. You would have to go to the Catskills to get more terrain and vertical. Don't go there for the nigthlife or if you are looking for a halfpipe and an advanced snowboard park. If you like to ski, this is the best place in all of eastern PA.

I like Elk. I'm 34, had 95 days riding last winter. So, I consider myself a good intermediate rider. True Double Black Diamonds still handle me. I had been I believe to Elk twice before 05-06 winter when I worked at a mountain in Vermont and began riding in the trees and woods. Ergo, I only have one real complaint with this mountain. They have a NO TREE SKIING or RIDING policy. I tried to have a constructive conversation with a woman who worked there about this. I got a blanket 'it's too dangerous'. This is how they cover up their laziness. This mountain has incredible glade possiblities. It already has great trails and fall lines. They need to develop a progressive attitude, develop the ski patrol (mountain maintenance), and develop this possible gem. I am probably going to not return much any more because of this policy. Good mountain, possibly great if it wasn't for this policy. Maybe they will wake up like Jay Peak did. Terrain -- 3 (Hunter 4, Sugarbush 4, Fernie 5) Service -- laid back, middle of the road Crowds -- Only place I've seen less was on 10 below day in New York Activities -- no development.. even this has untapped potential Value for the money.

I love to go to Elk Mt. for the skiing, no more no less, as it is close to home, and the best of a handful of ski areas within an hour's drive. Snow is well maintained, but Elk doesn't seem to "get it". Weak terrain park, slow lifts, lack of glades, minimal night skiing, and absence of snow tubing may be the reason that lift lines are usually minimal.
Elk is a nice place to ski on groomed trails and bumps, when available, but makes no effort to go above and beyond. No on-slopes lodging, no night life, and in a rush to close the bar as soon as the lifts stop running. Philosophy seems to be "We're Elk... Like it or lump it!!"

Terrain: This is on the top of my list guys. Not activities, food, not lift lines, simply good old (lots of steep preferably) terrain. Speaking from the point of an advanced skier of 10 years, I would choose ELK MT over any ski area in PA, WV and VA. No, not every black diamond here will shake you in your boots, but there are plenty to choose from with sustained pitch, nice and narrow. Give me 1000 ft vert and 7 or 9 of these trails like Mohawk, Iroquois and I wear a smile for days...till I return. As far to drive as Snowshoe from VA but more of what I love to ski! Service: About the same as anywhere else...I don't notice it much. Food is ok, I'm usually hungry enough to eat anything. Crowds: A nice quad would offer some relief, but heck, at least you have a 1000 vert to ski down... Activities: I ski. What else is there? Value: Tops. Worth the drive from here. Stay overnite to really enjoy it.
