Year 2006 goes down as the worst natural snow year on record for skiing in New Mexico! On Friday, March 10, 2006, I got real tired of skiing the same two blue runs at the Ski Santa Fe resort!! (no blacks open - only two blues open in the small section that could make snow) On Saturday, March 11, 2006, I drove up from Santa Fe and skied Sipapu. What a beautiful trip! Artist galleries and wineries were prevalent at many of the small communities I passed through. The mountains and the Rio Grande River were awesome! When I got to Sipapu, only about 60% of the bottom ski runs were open (again, only those runs that could make snow). The skiing was great, considering the lack of good snow conditions! I skied only the blues runs and a short black run that was open. All runs were nice, somewhat short, but well maintained and groomed. For the beginner and intermediate skier, this is a nice resort. The Sipapu lodge reminds me of a ski lodge unchanged from the 1960s. No glamour or glitter but very functional with plenty of character. The service was excellent! The Sipapu employees were very friendly people to deal with. Meals and drinks were good and reasonably priced. There was never a wait for lift lines or drinks/lunch. Most weekends at Sipapu are considered as a "theme" weekend. I experienced the Hawaiian weekend with most staff wearing grass skirts and lays. Best of all was the value. The lift tickets are priced right! In conclusion, yes, I would ski Sipapu again!
