I skied at Bretton Woods yesterday. This mountain is not the greatest but there is an even pitch which stays with you right to the lift making it a great cruising mountain.

There are lifts everywhere to make sure there is no wait the mountain was really laid out properly. Most importantly I did not run a gauntlet of police cars on my way to and from the mountain like you do at Loon.

Matter of fact I saw none at all ! There were no mountain cops either telling me to slow down and closing off trails to that I have paid to ski on. Bretton Woods is centrally located as well the Following mountains

To break things up if you wanted to:

Cannon 15 minutes away

Attitash 15min

Wildcat- 25 min

Loon has become the police state mountain that all the people who ski there are used to as this is how they are treated in Massachusetts were they all come from.Loon has brought them all there and know wants to control them on their terms and threaten them by pass revocation. Skiing is the greatest example of freedom there is take those freedoms away like loon has and all you are doing is sitting in another traffic jam and dealing with stress. Skiing is a piece of mind and tranquility.I am thinking strongly of returning my recent season pass letter I received from Loon in the mail with an attached letter to the general manager

Expressing what I feel the mountain has turned into and saying No thankyou to Loon.

There are other better places to ski with out being strong armed by local cops and mountain police.

They can keep their dogs in their pen that they have built.

Owe I almost forgot that I will be sure to mention the Fred Factor which helped me make my decision.

Snowboarded Loon for the first time this season last weekend. I've been riding mostly Maine the last couple of years but when Boyne bought Sunday River and Sugarloaf, the ski and stay rates went through the roof and I've been doing day trips to NH this year. The mountain itself is ok and they do a good job with the terrain parks. However, the lift conditions, both at the bottom and top were the worst that I've ever seen (sheets of ice and the staff did nothing all day even though there was plenty of snow to shovel over the ice). At that top of one lift they had a person standing there - useless - watching people sliding off the chair and falling. Liftline management was nonexistent. Seems as though Boyne has raised prices and cut staff to drive profits.

I have been skiing for 44 years. I have skied all over the world with US ski team members. This is the first ski area that pulled my pass for skiing 20mph.

This is a beginner mountain with plenty of flat trails.

The idea is that Loon is a Family mountain. The sad part is that most middle class families can't afford to ski anymore.

A rich family mountain? It seems that way.

The idea is to turn it into a Aspen/Vail resort of the east.

The truth is Stowe did this with the help of AIG.

The new South Mountain expansion at Loon is a complete disappointment for real skiers.

When spring time arrives the skiers will have to push pole to the bottom at the new Loon's South peak.

The cross connect chairlift to get to South Peak is another issue just waiting for the insurance companies to discover.

This is a lift with major flaw designs.Someone will get seriously hurt resulting in a head injury.

The architect of Loon deserves an award. Loon has the best designed gondola system in the East. You arrive, park, put on your gear in one of the two ajoining lodges, and enter the covered gondola shed through glass doors. On weekdays--its ideal--on weekends and holidays you should prepare for a good long wait that begins outside.

The gondola seats only four--a six or an eight would have been a much better idea. The ride to the top affords a glimpse of Mount Washington arrising like a white whale in the distance.

At the top the view is grand, especially on the trails to skier's left.

The terrain is diverse. The chairs that service the more difficult upper part of mountain have short lines even on the busiest of days.

Loon has a cute little steam train that takes you on a short ride from the lower quad to the Main lodge--a treat for the kids.

All mountain services are first rate: food-drink-spa-comfort-hospitality, but prepare for a bang on your wallet.

If you can plan your ski time midweek-non-vacation--you will have a ball.

My neice attends Plymouth State College--we stayed near by at a unique lodging dig called the Common Man Inn. The complex, 20 minutes from the Mountain was once a popsicle stick factory and it is rich in history and funky charm. On site at the Common Man is a lively bistro/bar/eatery and guests enjoy a very decent continental breakfast. Discount lift tickets are available at the desk as part of the ski and stay program in conjunction with Waterville Valley and Loon.

Bad experience. Over crowded, and someone stole my board. The staff could not have been less caring or helpful; all they wanted was to take more of my money. I would never recommend Loon -- overrated on a good day. The slopes are overrated. There are much better places to go.

There are two loons, like any mountain I guess, The weekend loonies will wait for lifts, so I only advise weekday loon.
I prefer governor's lodge though it is only for the buckle in part. You can cruise and do about everything in a couple of days but these trails will ski endlessly.
With the long awaited expansion I hope they incorporate many of the same magic that they seem to possess. I recommend skiing it all and then re-visiting a couple of years later.
