Chestnut has some nice runs and actually has decent vertical for the Midwest. The snow conditions are good when it's cold enough but obviously can get pretty slushy. Beginner facilities are good. The big negative is that it can get very crowded on the weekends with lots of Chicago, etc. visitors. Definitely a nice view of the Mississippi river.

As a ski shop employee I am asked several times daily where the best place to go is in the Rockford/Chicagoland area. For me, with out a doubt it has to be Chestnut. Chestnut has the steepest run in the tri-state area, and on top of that has an even pitch throughout the entire hill; thats something than none of the other resorts can boast. For people looking for jumps and rails the terrain park has really improved over the last few years as well. The resort is also efficiently ran and always has good snow coverage.
