A great place to go year round. Great for scenery, snow and location without having to deal with the gambler element at Tahoe. Safe for kids as the resort is in a valley with only 1 road through it so there is no high speed through traffic on the road. Nice pool and spa with beautiful sunset views from the spa. If you're getting up in years and don't have quite the energy to rage on the slopes from sunup to sundown anymore, there is a plaza with lots of seating and views of the ice rink, half pipe, and much of the mountain to sit and watch all the wonderful activity. A cross country groomed trail takes you through the meadow or across the highway to more challenging trails. You'll meet up with friendly locals on the meadow trail.

I have had a season pass to Kirkwood the past two years. It was amazing both years. It is the closest resort to San Jose and had the most snow both winters. If Sierra or Heavenly got 4 inches, Kwood got 8. It was amazing. Kirkwood's main runs are rather short, unfortunately. But someone who frequents Kirkwood will quickly learn that there are amazing tree runs in all directions. It was always pretty easy to find untouched powder 3 days after snow dropped. The thing that angered me most about Kirkwood were the two times we were denied entry because the parking lot was full. Both times were total powder days. I have learned to avoid all resorts on MLK and Pres Day weekend unless it is snowing like crazy and the waits are gauranteed worth it.
My rating makes it not look so great. But the 5 I gave for terrain should be weighted heavily.

Hit Kirkwood on a Saturday thinking less crowded slopes, but that didn't work out. The crowd was OK, but I was looking for a lot less. The Terrain didn't seem all that great. The blue runs are very short. Out of the 6 resorts I hit that week, Kirkwood for me wasn't that much fun. No good views of the lake. For a mid-size resort a $62 lift ticket didn't seem like a value. Staff was friendly and they did a nice job of getting the mob onto the lifts and up the mountain. The blues are very wide and that helped keep the people at bay. It's hard to fault a resort for crowds, but I had to rate them lower on value, crowds and terrain. Service was good. Snow was still good for a 50's+ Spring Ski like day on Feb. 10. Maybe hitting Kirkwood on a weekday would be a better bet.

Had a blast, noooo crowds. Although Chair 6 was running slow..you do ride in the sun till closing (at least starting in February). C10 takes you up quick, but the mountain feels small. You jump off the cliffs and 8 turns later you're on "intermediate" runs. The place needs longer steeps..something ala C23 at Mammoth, eh? And to you other older skiers out there, watch out for the big jumps in the skatepark...when you land the old bode gets rocked.
