First of all, I'm 16, and I've been skiing up in Tahoe-area ski resorts for my entire skiing career. I've been to most of the resorts up there, but Soda Springs always holds a special place.

Soda Springs is definitely the cheapest and best value when it comes to the places to ski, even though it falls far short of a "resort" definition. Two lifts and a single room lodge are enough for getting the first run of the year in.

Of course if you're planning a long multiple night trip that includes flying in and hotel accomodations, then Soda Springs doesn't hold a candle or Squaw or Heavenly. However, there probably isn't any easier way to teach someone, or learn yourself, how to ski or snowboard.

I personally learned there, and though I'd consider my self an intermediate to advanced skier, it's still the easiest, cheapest, closest, and most laid back of all the options in the Sierras.
