Ever heard the words like Chugach backcountry or Valdez steeps? Come here and get a taste for yourself. I first came to Alyeska during summer 2000, the tram tour of course, and I thought in winter this place would be interesting. I changed my vacation plan the next spring from Utah to here, and since then I have made this place my primary winter skiing spot, sometimes I still go to utah, gotta miss the wastach smokes. You see, first I went to Colorado with my parents, then discovered how much better Utah was, like Alta and Bird, then here. The mountain is fantastic, no crowd, just a ton of untracked steeps and open bowls, the weather is actually not cold at all, and on a sunny day, the view is just beautiful. I have never skiied the Valdez steeps yet, but I think Alyeska is as close as you can get without paying for a helicopter or the risk of your life. The mountain is not good for beginners but there are few green runs, and you can learn there and urge yourself to advance to blues sooner, should not need more than a week to ski half of the mountain. Other than skiing the resort has few other activities to offer but this is the last frontier not the front range. The resort itself is nice but kinda expensive, I usually just find myself a neat motel near Anchorage airport and commute everyday, had nothing to do other than skiing anyway. Lodging in Anchorage off season is dirt cheap. The shorline drive from the resort to Anchorage is just beautiful, you would rather drive it everyday than commute in Chicago.

I ski'd for my second time ever here in March of 2004. It was a bit overwhelming for a beginner. I got stuck on a blue slope that I kissed (bit the dust, or snow I should say) about 15 times on the way down. However, now that I'm a more intermediate/advanced skiier, the trails would have been great. Wide, powder (12" night before), and staff was very friendly. Looking forward to going back on my next business trip to AK.
