Magic Mountain

Magic Mountain. Steeped in Vermont.

Magic Mountain in Londonderry is a true renaissance of the original Vermont mountain area experience. Many skiers and riders ‘in the know’ consider Magic to be one of southern Vermont’s last unspoiled winter destinations. The area has been making improvements every year since reopening in 1997.… More

This is how my dad, a ski patrolman, described Magic: "If you are dating some guy who keeps straight-lining the groomers at Flatton like a jerk and you want to put him in his place, wait for a powder day and take him across town to Magic." It's true -- Magic, a skier's mountain, is the steepest, most technical terrain in Southern Vermont... and it is absolutely spectacular. The double chair isn't a detachable, and it runs slow, but I'll admit that I need the rest. In addition, since I've never encountered a substantial wait in the lift line (compare with a local gondola), the uphill capacity is effectively dead-on.

One of the best things about Magic is watching other skiers. It is a mountain that attracts very skilled downhill and telemark skiers. I think this is because it's a tricky mountain to ski, but also because it's an exciting one. Some parts are steep, some parts are narrow, and some parts have six and eight foot ledges -- and some trails have two or more of these qualities. (Broomstick to Heart of Magician, with a detour through the Hallows would be my favorite example.) It's the kind of mountain that inspires you to be a better skier.

The people working at Magic all seem happy to be there and happy to have you as a guest, and the other skiers and riders always seem to be having a great time... it's a ski area with terrific vibes... an absolute gem. If you can ski, and there is enough snow to get an edge in, this is far and away the best use of your ski dollars and ski days in Vermont.

Here is the thing about Magic...Virtually no snowmaking and the lifts are so slow on a cold day..However....Catch it on a powder day and it is by far the best mountain besides Stowe in Vermont...Some of the steep galdes there rival those I've experienced in Tahoe or Utah...That is the paradox of this mountain...So good when there is alot of natural snow...A freaking sheet of bullet proof ice with little to zero mountain maintence on those "off days"....Truly for those who want to really have a challenging day of skiing/riding in the NE..
