I think the Canyons has the best terrain in Park City and with the least amount of crowds. If you are comfortable on blue runs, welcome to Utah's largest resort. If not, you are limited to a rather small part of the mountain. However, the beginner trails are at the TOP of the gondola, not at the base, giving first-time skiers more of an alpine feel than they would get on the bunny slopes of PCMR or Deer Valley.
The place is HUGE and has terrain for everyone. Many complain about the layout as the resort is spread out over several mountain peaks. While it can be a bit confusing if you are new to the resort, you'll be fine if can read a trail map. You can literally set out and explore the mountains each morning, and it will take you days to ski it all. Plus, it helps to spread out the crowds. With the exception of the gondola during peak morning hours, lift lines are rarely more than 5 minutes on even the busiest days, and pretty much nonexistent once you get away from the center of the resort. The runs tend to be longer on average than either PCMR or Deer Valley and it has more sustained vertical. What's not to like? Well, some clearly dislike the open air people mover from the parking lot to the pedestrian village - i personally prefer it to Deer Valley's tram. It's not an issue if you are staying in the resort village. There are only two ways up the mountain from the village: the gondola - which as noted can get crowded on a busy morning; or a painfully slow double chair (which actually services some nice terrain - but it's REALLY slow). But my biggest complaint is that there are only two lodges on the mountain, and one of them (Red Pine at the top of the gondola) is a zoo for much of the day. The northern 2/3 of the resort lacks any kind of indoor shelter that's open to the public - just some bathrooms and outdoor grills, and a bunch of really big (seemingly empty) mansions. Come to think of it, it sure would be nice if they would convert one or two into another lodge. While all three Park City resorts are worth a visit, I find myself skiing the Canyons most often.

I don't think I could recommend this place to anyone. After taking THREE lifts, you finally get to the top of the mountain. Now, at some places this means being very deep into the mountain, here though it takes you to the first opportunity for a full run. The first lift only takes you from the parking lot to the base of the gondola. The gondola then takes you over some canyons to the base of the ski area. Then you take your first chair up to reach a peak. As others have pointed out, this is a really poorly designed mountain. The newest peaks have mainly been open only to allow for residential development and the ski slopes just conveniently pass through.
If you are staying in the Park City area, don't waste your time. Deer Valley, Park City, Alta and Snowbird all have plenty of world-class skiing. Don't ruin your trip with a stop at The Canyons.

Why anyone would choose to ski the canyons, with snowbird and alta 30 minutes away, is beyond me. Between the crowds, the poor layout, the endless traversing, the wind swept ice, and the lack of true steep and deep terrain, the resort was underwhelming and frustrating - even on a day with 9" of fresh (all tracked out by 11am). Too bad Alta had 15" that day, minimal crowds, and the most badass terrain around.

The Canyons has great potential. The only knock on this resort is its infrastructure. They need better connected lifts and less bottlenecks. That said, the terrain off of the ninety-nine-ninety is totally awesome. Lots of steeps there and lots of great tree skiing, not to mention the chutes all the way on skier's left through the gates. Ride there and you get sustained steeps all the way down to the elevation of Red Pine Lodge. Other runs I like - The Abyss off of Peak-5 lift, the run under Peak-5, runs facing north off of Super Condor and Sun Peak Express and Grande and Paradise off of Tombstone. One of the most awesome areas with nice steeps is off Golden Eagle. I wish they would upgrade Golden Eagle from a slow double chair to a high speed quad or even six pack. That would help eliminate the bottleneck of getting on the mountain and also, I would do laps on that chair if it were higher capacity. Anyway, I love the Canyons!
