Though not a towering giant of a mountain, what Gunstock lacks in size it makes up for in a
grand variety of snow activities that make great recreation for all levels of snow sport expertise. Night skiing, cross-country skiing, snow tubing, a twelve acre terrain park and a down hill experience that includes lots of cruisers and a newly enhanced beginner ski center are all part of the Gunstock program. Statistically, the mountain rises close to 1500 feet from the base with 53 trails serviced by six lifts and a busy set of snowguns that boast a 90% coverage. The bulk of the trails are in the intermediate zone, but there is something for every level of skier ability with three glades for those that love the trees. The newest part of the beginner program is the Silver Medal Quad that services just the beginner area. It’s dedicated to local Olympic champion Penny Pitou, and bears her name. The view from the top of the Mountain is an expansive vista of Lake Winnipesaukee which stretches out in front of you like a great white winter cake. Its 300 islands pop from the icing like frozen broccoli florets. This is Gunstock’s grand glory. Gunstock is at its most festive in the early evenings when the lights come up on the mountain and snow tubing is running full tilt. There is a wonderful youthful energy in the air and it’s contagious. Night skiing is available on 21 of the mountain’s trails with most of the day lifts running. Night tubing is slick bumpy adventure on the well designed tube run. It’s full of giggles and a blast of winter fun. Suggested height is 42”. A convenient feature at Gunstock is The Hut at the base of the lifts. When you get thirsty or you need to warm your toes by the fireside, you can store your skis, poles, and board, free of charge, at the Hut and make your way down to the lodge. Snacks and ski fuel are available at the main lodge along with brews at the Pistol Pub. Have you ever heard of Nordic Skijoring? It was a new term for me. Skijoring is part of the Gunstock Nordic Cross Country program that allows you to ski with your dog! For a ten dollar fee you can rent a double harness that connects you to your dog via bungee cords. The cross country ski course area covers 52 kilometers. Traditional x-country skis or skate skis are available for rental. A full package of boots, skis, poles, and a trail pass is an affordable $40. Snowshoes for the winter hiker are also a part of the comprehensive program of winter fun at the Nordic Center.
