Black Mountain of Maine
Imagine... an alpine Lift ticket for only $10??? Too good to be true?--not at Black Mountain of Maine. The fact that you can ski all day on Fridays for only $10 and ski for free on Fridays from 4 to 9 is strong motivation for those with a tight purse. Black Mountain is especially friendly to families, making skiing and boarding an affordable adventure even for the economically challenged. Black mountain is by no means a small hill, in fact it climbs to over 1,000 feet of vertical and there are challenges for the advanced skier and thrills in the terrain park. It has an easy-peasy set of bunny slopes that are perfect for first-timers on skis and boards. Night skiing runs from the top of the mountain down to the lodge, with night lighting on the Tubing Park, the Terrain Park, and the Bunny Slopes. The Lodge at Black Mountain is new and comfy. Sitting in front of a hot cocoa you can spy on the action on the main mountain or take a trip back in time to the beginnings of Maine Skiing as one of the Lodge rooms is a ski museum. There you'll find photographs and exploits of some of Black Mountain's illustrious champions. One of those champions is the renown 92 year-old Chummy Broomhall, still very active on the mountain and a living encyclopedia of history. Chummy was an Olympian and a member of the elite group of skiers and mountaineers that made their mark in World War II. A special exhibit in the room documents their amazing story. Black Mountain celebrated its 50th birthday in 2011. Saturday and Sunday lift tickets are $29 for adults and $25 for juniors with kids 5 and under free. Four hour half-day tickets are available in the AM or the PM and are $25 for adults and $16 for juniors. A full weekend of skiing--2 full days on Friday and Saturday and a half day on Sunday (leaving time for a comfortable ride home) comes to only $64 for adults and $51 for juniors. Or night ski for free on Friday, spend the night, and ski all day Saturday for under $30. Board and ski rentals feature all new equipment this year and are very reasonable. Black Mountain is a great deal. Owned and operated by the non-profit group Maine Winter Sports Center--its mission is to make skiing affordable. If there's a cross-country skier in your group, Black Mountain has a rich Nordic history. Host to the National championships on more than one occasion, there are miles of trails to explore.
