Mt. Baldy

Real Skiing...Real Close

Herb Leffler first came to Mt. Baldy in 1944 to have a ski area for himself and his buddy, Jim Chaffee, and to make a little money off his skiing hobby. Their rope tow eventually led to the Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts, which began in 1952. Now, Mt. Baldy has evolved into the largest and steepest… More

Learning how to ski at Mt. Baldy back in the 82-83 season was the best decision I ever made. Mt.Baldy blows everything else out of the water when it comes to southern Cali. skiing. Forget about the nightmare crowds and un-challenging runs in Big Bear. Baldy is the only S. California ski resort with double black diamonds. Although the road can be challenging to get up during or right after a snow dump.....but with enough weight in the back of the car and chains, it's no problem. The crowd at Baldy is also not the reckless crowd of young kids that you see in Big Bear. It is well worth checking out and I guarantee that once you ski Baldy, you will never want to deal with Big Bear or Mtn. High again. And if your fortunate to make it up right after a storm, get ready for the best powder ever!! So what are you waiting for!! GO BALDY!!!

Mt. Baldy is one of the last of the breed of old-time ski areas. With challenging terrain, cheap lift tickets, and convenient location (under an hour from literally millions of people in LA) it has plenty to offer. The only other ski areas in Southern California that had similar characteristics (Kratka Ridge and Mt. Waterman) are closed, possibly for ever.

Don't go looking for modern facilities, extensive grooming, or heavy snow making. Rocks are common and grease sometimes drips from the old, slow chairs. But if you go after a good storm and like family-style service of the kind that was prevalent in the 70's and 80's, you can have an excellent day of skiing. If the weather is clear, the views are some of the most stunning anywhere; with LA, Catalina Island and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the desert to the north, and the Angeles Crest surrounding.

I'll be back after the next big dump, see you there!
