Mt. Lemmon Ski ValleyArizonaFew people think of snow and skiing when they think of Tucson. Cactus, desert, and diamondbacks more readily come to mind. The Santa Catalina Ranger District, however, is home to the southernmost ski area in the United States, which is perched near the 9,157-foot summit of Mt. Lemmon. Ski… More Mt. My GG's live in Tuscon and I've seen MT. Lemon and I'm surprised that for a mountain this down south it has snow!

Went skiing on a Thursday. It had been about 2 weeks since the last snowfall, so I was not suprised that the snow was mostly hardpack, no powder. Snow covered all the runs, but it was pretty tough to ski on the hardpack, and although exposed rocks were limited to some of the black runs, there were enough fallen twigs, acorns, etc to scuff up my skiis a bit. Crowds were non-existent, I think there were about 10 other people total. The snow softened by noon, so mabye it's better to ski in the afternoon; we left before lunchtime. Staff was very friendly. Lift ticket was $35. Sure it's a small operation, but it's nice and close to Tucson, and when it has fresher snow I bet it is a lot of fun to ski. The day I went, it was a lot of work and the skis took a beating; if you don't mind either, or plan to rent gear, you'll have a mountain all to yourself!
I have no idea what the other entry means when they say you go thru a ghetto??? The foothills area of Tucson is about as nice at it comes!

We took our 7 year old son up there for the first time to ski. We were planning on putting him in a ski lesson, however there were no ski intructors/lessons on the day that we went, I suggest you call first to check. We gave him a few instructions on our own and we all had a great time snow skiing at ski valley. Also, there were no crowds and no waiting in long lines. Thanks.
