The Way Telluride Used to Be.....

The Alta Lakes Observatory is a rustic getaway lodge located on the back side of the Telluride Ski area underneath Palmyra and Silver peaks in the San Juan Mountains. Built in the mid 70′s a visit to the cabin takes you back to how Telluride used to be. The cabin comfortably sleeps up to 10 people and is an amazing place to access the backcountry, come stay the night or the week.

In the winter the cabin is accessed by either skiing from the Telluride ski area through the Bald Mountain backcountry gate, hiking or snowmobiling four miles from highway 145 at the Alta Lakes road head or cross-country ski or tour from top of lift 10. It is recommended that parties communicate their travel plans with The Alta Lakes Observatory and stick together as a group. For winter travel, proper backcountry gear and knowledge is essential.
