Built in 1853 by Joseph and Sarah Goodell as the Halfway House, the Avery Hotel gets its name from Peter and Nancy Avery, who purchased the Hotel in 1869, and their son, George, who operated the Hotel from the mid-1870s until 1908, when George's son, Morton, took over. All together, the Avery Family owned the Hotel for over 90 years.

With their love of antiques, the Gotelli family has taken up the legacy of the Hotel in fine fashion. Each room is decorated and furnished uniquely, and in addition to the rich history which permeates the Hotel, at least one ghost has been known to put in an appearance or two.
