"Telemark" skiing was named for the Norwegian county of Telemcrk and has the distinction of being one of the oldest disciplines of skiing dating back to the early 1700's. Telemark is generally defined as skiing downhill with a ski boot that attaches to a ski only at the toe, and creating turns by dropping the uphill knee and lifting the uphill heel.
In the days of no ski lifts and one type of ski to do it all, this graceful and effective style of downhill skiing would often be combined with jumping, cross-country and uphill skiing. In fact, until the beginning of this century a telemark, or drop-knee turn, was the most common way to descend. Today, with constant advancements in equipment and teaching techniques, this sport lives on and has begun a resurgence in popularity.
Ski Blading on the other hand has become a very hot and very unique approach to "getting down the hill." These miniature skis react fast, allow for quick turns and jumps, even in a pipe! Come to Smuggs, and Just Try It!
