The San Francisco Peaks lie due north of Flagstaff, Arizona.

The scenic beauty of these majestic mountains has been and continues to be molded by the forces of nature. The prominent Peaks represent a unique geological feature, which significantly illustrates the process of volcanism. The elevation ranges from approximately 8,000 ft. at the base of the mountains to 12,663 ft. at the summit of Humphreys Peak, Arizona’s highest point. I

n 1984, the President of the United States signed a bill that designated 18,000 acres of the Peaks as the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. As such, all of the laws and regulation pertaining to wilderness apply on the Peaks.

The Peaks are very sacred to many Northern Arizona Indian Tribes. To the Hopi, they are the home of the Kachina Gods, the Source of Clouds that bring rain for their crops. To the Navajo, the Peaks are one of the cardinal points in the universe and without praying to these mountains, the blessing sought would never come.

Careful planning and preparation are essential to enjoyable hiking and backpacking on the San Francisco Peaks. The following information is provided as a planning aid. Please read this information carefully.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE GOLDEN RULE OF NO TRACE HIKING AND CAMPING…
“TAKE ONLY PICTURE, LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS

CAMPING is not allowed above timberline at 11,000 ft. elevation or within the Inner Basin. This is to help protect the fragile tundra, Senicio Franciscanus and the City of Flagstaff’s municipal water supply.

CAMPFIRES are also prohibited in the same areas. Fires are allowed below 11,000 ft. Keep them small and use only wood which will burn completely to ash. Fires should be built on mineral soil. Take care to clear burnable material from the fire area. IF YOU PACK IT IN, PLEASE PACK IT OUT. Do not burn garbage, foil, cans, plastic or nylon of any kind.

ARTIFACTS AND RUINS are a major portion of the history and heritage of the San Francisco Peaks. All items of this nature are protected by law against damage or removal. We request that you only look, admire and photograph these items.

ENDANGERED PLAN SPECIES are located above timberline, therefore hiking is restricted to designated trails only.
